The UWA Fencing Club specialises in the Epee discipline, but welcomes Sabre and Foil discipline athletes too. The Club is located at the UWA International Martial Arts Centre, within UWA’s Claremont campus. The use of the club’s equipment inventory is included in your membership fee, but you are expected to progressively purchase your own equipment. The International Martial Arts Centre includes three permanent aluminium pistes, plus a portable piste that can be used for competition purposes.
Training and Coaching
The club holds training sessions across the following times and dates, with free class for beginners offered to UWA students.
Tuesday – 5.30–7.30pm
Thursday – 5.30–7.30pm
Friday – 6–8pm
Saturday – 8.30am–12pm
The UWA Fencing Club boasts the most highly qualified coaches in Western Australia, with all coaches recognised by the Australian Sports Commission. Head Coach, Tuko Maia, recently returned from work at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic games. Tuko held the roles of Technical Official and Sports Information Co-ordinator for both the able-bodied and Paralympic athletes.
The UWA Fencing Club offers members the opportunity to purchase a membership that provides access to all club training sessions. Alternatively, members can purchase a package that will allow them access to one or two club training sessions per week. Ultimately the membership package you choose will depend on your competitive goals. UWA students can access discounted rates.
