Click the headings below to see which squad is the best fit.
- Junior White
- 45 minute session duration- recommend at least one to two sessions per week
The Junior White Squad is an introductory squad. Athletes will be trained to develop skills and abilities in all four competitive strokes with correct technique. They will also be taught the art of ‘turns’, use of the pacing clock, general rules and etiquette of squad training.
Athletes are requested to attend at least one session per week. Naturally, more than one session per week will be more beneficial in consolidating basic skills, leading to being promoted to the next level with the Development Pathway - Junior Green.
Training sessions for Junior White Squad members is for 45 minutes duration and is available every week day afternoon, Monday through to Friday, along with some mornings at both HBF Stadium and UWA, and Saturday morning at UWA.
- Junior Green
- 1 hour session duration – recommend at least 2 to 3 sessions per week
Once promoted to Junior Green swimmers are requested to attend at least two to three sessions per week. Squad sessions are of one-hour duration.
While the main objective of this squad is still stroke development, an increasing emphasis is placed on improving endurance, introduction of split-strokes, drills, starts, turns and finishes.
Junior Green Squad training is available every week day afternoon, Monday through to Friday, along with some week day mornings at both HBF Stadium and UWA, and Saturday morning at UWA.
- Junior Blue
- 1 hour 15 minutes session duration – recommend at least 3 to 4 sessions per week
After achieving all the required competency levels in Junior Green, athletes can then be promoted to the Junior Blue Squad. Progression into this level is largely based on skill acquisition and training attendance.
The Junior Blue Squad focuses on correct technique and more advanced skill development while gradually increasing distance and endurance each session. With frequency in the water being critical for accelerated development, Junior Blue squad swimmers attend a minimum of three sessions per week. The greater level of commitment towards their swimming allows for the athletes physiological capacities to expand through swimming at higher intensities. We find this has a positive impact on other sporting activities the athlete engages in. More advanced skills are also refined, such as Medley turns and racing skills.
Junior Blue Squad Members are encouraged to compete at Club Nights and are always welcome to join the UWA West Coast Swimming Club if they wish to go further in the competitive pathway. Training sessions for Junior Blue Squad members is for one hour and 15 minutes in duration and is available every week day afternoon, Monday through to Friday, along with some week day mornings at both HBF Stadium and UWA, and Saturday morning at UWA.
- Junior Gold
- 1 hour 30 minutes session duration – recommend at least 4 to 5 sessions per week
The training objective for the Junior Gold Squad is to further enhance stroke technique and skill development, with race-specific training in preparation for competition.
Junior Gold swimmers improve their speed and endurance by attending at least four sessions a week. Each training session is for an hour and a half.
It is preferred that swimmers within the Junior Gold Squad become members of the UWA West Coast Swimming Club so they are able to develop through Club Nights and at various Club competitions throughout the year. Many committed Junior Gold athletes go on to become some of the best junior swimmers in Western Australia; becoming eligible to compete on behalf of the Club in individual and relay teams at Junior Championships.
