UWA ENGINEERING STUDENTS TEST NEW PADDLE WHEEL07.12.2009 - Six engineering students tested out their paddlewheel design on a Watersports Complex canoe recently. As Michael said “Basically, we formed as a team for a university unit, the goal being to help improve the life of Cambodian's living on the largest lake in Cambodia called the Tonle Sap. So our group decided to improve their quality of life through their current modes of transport, designing a Paddle Wheel, intended to be made completely out of one of their main exports, Bamboo. However, in making the making of the prototype, we used PVC pipe as a substitute. We tested it out at your facilities and it proved to be a huge success! That's the basic summary of our groups goal, and it proved to be a massive learning experience!” We at UWA Sports were pleased to be able to assist. 2009 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY GAMES - UWA FINISHES IN THE TOP 5!05.12.2009 - 11 Gold, 6 Silver and 10 Bronze medals - Tha games on the Gold Coast went off really well for the record contingent of 370 UWA participants, securing a remarkable fifth place! Once again giant Monash University emerged as overall champion, followed by the University of Melbourne in second and the University of Sydney in third place. UWA Sports congratulates all student athletes to their commitment, love for sport and fantastic effort! UWA WINS THE BATTLE OF THE UNIS!12.10.2009 - Two early goals were enough to see UWA defeat Murdoch University in the Amateurs Soccer Pools Cup Final at Litis Stadium on Sunday 11 October. Richard Barry and Ross Sheppard scored in the 9th and 12th minutes respectively to give their side a lead that an outclassed Murdoch side never looked like overcoming. The game was played in front of a large and vocal crowd with both universities well represented by their supporters. Murdoch looked nervy from the beginning, giving the ball away cheaply in midfield and failing to deal with UWA keeper Tristan Scott's long kicks. It was one from such booming kick that UWA took the lead when Julien Noyer's poor defensive header went straight to Barry on the edge of the penalty area. Barry brought the ball under control before riding the attempted recovery challenge from Noyer and slotting the ball comfortably past Andrew Barrett. Things went from bad to worse for the Murdoch defence in the 11th minute when Mark Kendall was penalised for a careless handball inside his own penalty area. UWA's top scorer Sheppard made no mistake with the spot kick, coolly side-footing the ball into the bottom corner. As the clock ticked away, UWA coach Andy Dickinson replaced Georgiou with fan favourite Matt Hill in an effort to shore up his defence. The move seemed to work with Murdoch failing to threaten again before the final whistle went, crowning UWA the 2009 Amateur Soccer Pools Cup champions. The Western Australian National Talent Identification (NTID) program for sprint paddling will operate from the UWA Watersports Complex on Wednesday nights and their coach will be available to coach UWA Paddling Club members on that night. All paddling equipment will be available at the new Paddling Club including a range of boats for learning paddling skills as well as elite racing craft. It is proposed that the new club will operate on Wednesday nights starting with paddling skills development programs. Specialist coaching with the NTID coach will operate from 5–6 pm. The women’s race was won by 2nd year Sport Science student Katrina Harris in a time of 3:59 followed by Emily Jasper (Medicine) 12 seconds behind and Tash (Ecoms) in 3rd place. Katrina had only been told about the race 1 hour prior to the start time thanks to a recruitment campaign by Ben Green in his lab. The highly anticipated men’s Race saw a number of elite runners in the field. Sam Maxwell (Ecoms), Neil Berry (Ecoms), Ben Green (Sports Science), Kieran Chute (Law) and defending champion Thomas Bruins (Eng) all tipped to have a chance of winning. In 2008, the club lost one of its dedicated members to suicide. Laef Allen was a player, coach, committee member and respected friend at the club before venturing to London during 2007. It was whilst in London, on the 26th of January 2008, he took his own life. Following the loss of an important club member and a treasured friend, the University Football Club is dedicating a round of fixtures each year to the memory of Laef Allen and to raising awareness of men’s health issues amongst youth. Many people have experienced significant emotional distress following the passing of Laef, and the club is keen to use this as a motivating factor in creating healthy lifestyle habits. As a football club with over 250 male members with an average age of 24, we believe we have access to a cross section of society in which it is vitally important to increase awareness of the health issues facing young men. Following the death of a close friend, the club is also keen to promote healthy lifestyle choices amongst our members to ensure we don’t lose another member to tragic circumstances. To assist us in raising awareness of men’s health issues, in 2009 the club has joined forces with Youth Focus. Youth Focus is a Western Australian, non-profit community based organisation working with young people who are showing early signs associated with suicide, depression and self-harm and their families. The Youth Focus Vision is “To Prevent Youth Suicide, Depression and deliberate Self-Harm”. Together we believe Youth Focus and the University Football Club can make a real difference amongst our members, and the wider community. The 2009 memorial round fixtures include the A grade sides playing Wesley Curtin at South Oval in Bentley, whilst the E grade sides play West Coast Cowan at McGillivray. Following the days matches, the club will be holding a special “Coaches Comments” presentation evening at the AJ Williams Pavilion at McGillivray. The event begins at 6pm and will include an information session from Youth Focus, the attendance of the Allen family and a BBQ. Those who wish to show their support for the cause and the club are welcomed to attend any of the events on the day. The Western Australian Yachting Foundation partnered with UWA Sport & Recreation Association to conduct this event with plans for national and international competitions. The Foundation 36 fleet that the Inter-University Sailing Challenge sailed was provided by the Western Australian Yachting Foundation (WAYF). UWA owns one of the Foundation 36 yachts and WAYF provided five from its fleet of eleven Foundation 36 yachts to make a fleet of six for the regatta. The W.A. Yachting Foundation 36 fleet is used for state, national and international competition as well being available for corporate sailing events. The inclusion of many first year University students to the club have seen the numbers of rowers increase, in both the novice and experienced level, leaving the club in a position to do very well in 2008. Some of the club members that you wouldn’t see down at Matilda Bay in the morning are those that have national duties to train for and attend. Emily Rose and Elizabeth Alderman are well into their preparations to again go to the World under 23 championships, we all hope that they can go one place better and claim gold this year. The club is celebrating as two of its members, Jeremy Stevenson and David Dennis, were part of the Australian Men’s Eight that claimed gold in World Cup 1 in Munich. The win has silenced the critics as only months ago the eight qualifying for the Beijing Olympics due do a disqualification of another country. The boat club has re-started veteran rowing enticing past members back down to the club on Thursday nights to get back a boat. The age variation in crews is astounding with some rowers over 70 and others as young as 28. We are hoping to make a serious challenge to the WA veteran competition in 2008, but either way it is good to see our past members back.UWA Rugby Legends playing Sudoku for Australia11.05.2008 - As you may or may not know UWA Rugby has 4 past players Mick Collis, Mark Skiffington, Hamish and Sandy Sutherland (see photo of UWA Rugby Turds at 1990 Club windup – Mick back 2nd from right, Hamish and Sandy Front centre) who have recently represented Australia at the World Sudoku Championships. These Championships were held in Goa India. What started out as a lad’s effort to represent their country became a reality and with the charm and charisma of Mick Colliss, their spiritual leader, the project blossomed. What followed was Australian kit (1936 Olympics design), local press on TV and radio, an interstate company producing a documentary (Sudocumentary) on their path to glory as well as local club legend status. But there was a catch in that they couldn’t cover all the expenses on the documentary (and it appears naming rights sponsor Members Equity got their money’s worth but didn’t come to the party to meet the shortfall). So the boys are seeking the help of members and supporters of the UWA Rugby Club. Two advertising teasers of the documentary have just been released for you to check out:3 UWA Rugby Players selected in the Australian U20 Team10.05.2008 - Three University of Western Australia Rugby Club players have been selected to represent Australia in the U20 iRB Junior World Championships in June.Tom Murday, David Pocock and Sam Wykes have been named in the 26-man squad that will travel to Wales.Pocock and Wykes are members of the Emirates Western Force squad. Combined with a visit to the Duckstein Brewery, it is always a popular day on the calendar. For more information please email Julian at the UWA Tennis Centre on juliano@sport.uwa.edu.au or call 9387 6056.REVIEW: UWA Sports Scholarship Breakfast07.05.08 - The 2008 UWA Sports Scholarship Recipients were officially recognized on Wednesday 7th May at a Breakfast function held at the Water Sports Complex. Sam Nunn, the grandson of WM Bob Nunn, presented Janine Murray with the Bob Nunn Scholarship and Simon Dawkins, Warden of Convocation and Associate Professor Jane Long, UWA Pro Vice Chancellor, were also in attendance to present certificates and meet the recipients. The Scholarship Breakfast turned out to be an opportunity for all attending recipients to share notes on life at UWA and the Australian University Games. UWA CRICKET23.04.2008 - Josh Mangan, winner of the 2007-08 Le Couteur Medal as University Cricket Club's club champion, has been rewarded for his outstanding season by winning an extension of his WACA rookie contract. The promising legspinner was the club's leading wicket-taker with 39 at the outstanding average of 19.74.Born and bred in Victoria where he studied architecture at Melbourne University, Mangan transferred to WA two years ago after being offered a contract by the WACA.He completed his degree this year to show that mixing studies with professional sport has no detrimental effect on either discipline. He also earned praise from a highly influential source - spin legend Shane Warne - who conducted a coaching session at the WACA in February and suggested Mangan was one of the best prospects in the country.Mangan was a runaway winner of the Le Couteur medal which was instigated by the club four years ago to recognise the club's founder Phil Le Couteur, UWA's first philosophy lecturer. The University Cricket Centre of Excellence programme continues to produce outstanding results in providing accelerated development for the club's youngsters.UCC was also delighted when former club captain Chris Rogers, who played at James Oval from 1996-2001, made his Test debut this summer.UWA RUGBY23.04.2008 Juniors Development Camp a Success The first week of the holidays saw a successful 3 day training camp run by the UWA Junior Rugby Club. Unfortunately, just upon his arrival in Perth he received very bad news from back home and had to cancel his coaching undertakings and return to Germany due to urgent family affairs. With the Judo Workshop already scheduled and widely advertised, Game organisers had to come up with a Plan B. They indeed got fortunate by securing the attendance of Judo Master and World Sambo Champion, Hidenaka Wakayama from Japan, a last minute lucky strike as Mr Wakayama has an impressive sporting and coaching background: He is a 6 dan (Black Belt), he weighs in at a hefty 140kg and he is currently a Judo instructor at the International Martial Arts University in Chiba and the Kokusai Budo University, Japan. He was sent to Perth by the All Japan University Judo Federation. With Hidenaka Wakayama providing precious insights into the latest coaching and playing techniques, the workshop turned out to be an overwhelming success, attracting numerous international competitors, local Judo enthusiasts as well as media representatives.TUESDAY 4 DECEMBER 2007“Witness the Fitness” Charity Sports EventThat’s what we call sports enthusiasm and dedication: 5 UWA students are aiming to complete 30Circuit/Group Fitness Classes within one week!
